Fabric Design Contest
My hunt for software and apps to make seamless background tiles led to me Spoonflower, a website that allows members to have their own fabric designs printed on a choice of fabrics. A great idea that I had almost forgotten about. It’s been fun working on fabric design, something that friends occasionally suggested that I should try sometime. So I thought I’d share what I found at Spoonflower: a contest that could lead to a career in fabric design for the winner.
The deadline is coming up quickly on April 24th but there is no entry fee for Fabric8, a fabric design contest co-sponsored by Spoonflower and Robert Kaufman Fabrics.
Only one design may be entered per person, and every entrant needs to get a Spoonflower account if they don’t already have one. But these accounts are free of charge, so it’s my favorite kind of contest; one with no entry fee! The theme for the contest is a design ‘inspired by pen & ink drawings using watercolors’. I assume that means a pen and ink design colored with watercolors.
From April 24th to May 1st 100 semifinalists will be chosen after a round of juried voting, from May 3rd to the 9th another round of public voting will result in the selection of 8 semifinalists and those eight semifinalists will be be asked to submit a collection of eight designs based on the entry submitted by June 5th. From June 7th to the 13th the final round of public voting will result in the selection of the contest winner who will be announced on June 14th.
The creator of the winning collection gets a contract with Robert Kaufman Fabrics including a $1000 advance against royalties, a creative professional digital drawing tablet, the Wacom Cintiq 12WX Pen Display and $250 in Spoonflower credit for custom fabric printing. The other seven semifinalists will each receive a $150.00 credit for custom fabric printing at Spoonflower.
Judges will be looking for original artwork, not clip art or public domain images in the designs submitted but there is no limit on the number of colors that can be used in the entry as any necessary color reduction will occur during the production process for the fabric. To find out more about this contest visit the Fabric8 site. Good luck!
Giant can-sculpture competition moving to Georgia St. to help Food Bank
One CAN make a difference! Between March 26 – April 4 visit CANstruction to help fight hunger in your community
VANCOUVER, March 19, 2012 /CNW/ – Organizers of CANstruction® Vancouver are announcing a new concept for its annual design-build sculpture competition held in support of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. In celebration of its tenth year, the competition is moving uptown where the public is invited to come and view giant sculptures made entirely of cans of food displayed at four locations along Georgia Street, between Thurlow and Granville.
“We liked the idea celebrating our big anniversary with a multi-venue exhibition that’s closer to the downtown action. With four great venues for the public to visit it will help us take a big bite out of hunger in our community, raise money for the Food Bank and bring in tens of thousands of cans of healthy food for those in need,” said Janice Podmore, CANstruction® co-chair.
It’s shocking to us that over one third of the Food Bank’s recipients are children. While Canstruction is an exciting and slightly wacky design competition, we take it seriously – the needs at the Food Bank are just so great.
Over that past nine years, thanks to our teams, sponsors and volunteers, CANstruction® Vancouver has raised 1,056,000 cans in support of the Vancouver Food Bank Society. We plan to “build” on that in 2012 by bringing CANstruction into the heart of Vancouver, close to shopping, businesses and transit,” said Podmore.
CANstruction® admission is free but visitors are encouraged to make a small cash donation to the Food Bank. For every $1 donated, the Food Bank, with the help of their suppliers, can buy up to $3 worth of food.
34 companies, schools and associations will come together to form 20 teams, each building a sculpture with food they are donating to the Food Bank. “This fun event gives us all a chance to get to know our fellow employees a little bit better while volunteering together on a very worthwhile cause,” said Ferenc Pataki, FortisBC team captain. “CANstruction is an ideal opportunity for all of us, from many different companies, to team up to achieve a common goal – helping alleviate hunger in our community.”
All teams will be vying for the 14 national and local CANstruction awards. This includes the Vancouver Sun’s People’s Choice Award – everyone is invited to cast their vote by visiting the paper’s online contest site.

‘Celebrating Alberta’ a new juried exhibiton in Alberta
There is no fee for Alberta Society of Artist members, but there will be a fee of $25.00 for non-members. The entry deadline for the show which will feature art that supports the theme ‘Celebrating Alberta’, is Thursday August 16, 2012, 4pm.
This traveling exhibition is still in the planning stages but more information should be available on the Society’s website in the near future. Submission information and a registration form can already be downloaded here.
I enjoyed a road trip to Alberta last summer and can’t wait until I get to go again. Too bad this exhibition is for Alberta artists only! There is so much inspiration there. . .
