On Animation

I love exploring all kinds of animation and with the all the possibilities that are opening up in Flash animation and with open source software there is so much to see and do and not enough time to do it all.

Learn Motion Design Basics

Many thanks to Vimeo and the students of the “Basics of Motion Design”-class (the class of 2009? I believe) at the Hochschule für Künste (University of the Arts) in Bremen for this wonderful video. Sit back, watch, listen and learn. A visual and audio primer that will help anyone get started with video or animation. I intend to watch it a time or two more just to make sure that all the lessons here have time to sink in.

After all, according to the this primer, it’s best not to ignore the fourth dimension.

Some great animation with beads.

Sometimes I think I collect way too much stuff. Then I tell myself that a mixed media artist needs lots and lots of media to work with. I mean who can get really creative without drawers and drawers of supplies? If only I could keep up with all the ideas bouncing around in my head.

When people ask me where I get my ideas I don’t know what to say. They arrive. They jostle and crowd around in there and often don’t let me get enough sleep at night. Where exactly a particular idea comes from I don’t know. Making a point of seeing a lot of art by many different artists does help. The more you see the more you understand what the possibilities are. It’s not about copying.

One thing I do know for sure is that having too many ideas can be as bad as having none. One has to focus and choose and just do it. Get a project done. Lately I’ve been much better at focusing and picking a direction and following through. So I’m happy enough with myself. The drawers of supplies do sometimes worry me though.

My beading supplies are a case in point. My first solution was to make gifts with them and use them up. That’s not working because invariably there’s something I need that I don’t have and I just go to the bead store and end up buying something more. The piles just grow and grow. I think at some point I will glue them to a support and paint a picture with beads. No buying beads; the point will be to let an image develop out what I have there. And then I’ve been thinking that maybe someday I’ll use some of those beads in animation work where I create mixed media images with my scanner. That way I can get my digital fix too.

Just today I found some inspiration in a vimeo video. Most of this is done with stop motion animation and beads of course. Take a look at this music video;

Kevin Rudolf featuring Flo Rida “You make the rain fall” from alexandre moors on Vimeo.

A lot of amazing videos can be found at vimeo.com, lots in HD. This is a good site for inspiration and growing ideas. I know so many possibilities will grow out of exploring what has been done by all the talented people there. In the meantime I’d better check what else I have socked away in my supply drawers and try to get lots of sleep.
